AYA NEO SLIDE: AMD APU switch to new Ryzen 7 7840U confirmed for GPD Win 4 rival

AYA NEO continues to tease the AYA NEO SLIDE, nearly a year after unveiling the device alongside the AYA NEO 2. Although that has proven the case with the AYA NEO 2 and the AIR Plus, the SLIDE remains in development. The company appears no closer to releasing the SLIDE either, despite hoping to originally launch the gaming handheld in Q4 2022. Instead, AYA NEO now reports the following:

The development of AYA NEO Slide is now well underway, and the structural design of the handheld has been optimized to achieve the upgrade of heat dissipation structure, next will be more in-depth testing and tuning.

AYA NEO has also provided more details about the SLIDE's APU usage. Initially, the company hoped to ship the SLIDE with the Ryzen 7 6800U, a popular option for modern gaming handhelds like the GPD Win 4. However, the delays in development resulted in AYA NEO confirming that the SLIDE would rely on a newer Ryzen 7000 APU instead.

While the company teased as much in January, it has taken until now for it to reveal that the SLIDE will be powered by the Ryzen 7 7840U. For context, the Ryzen 7 7840U succeeds the Ryzen 7 6800U with Zen 4 CPU cores and an RDNA 3-based iGPU. Based on earlier leaks, the Radeon 780M and its 12 Compute Units (CUs) could be anywhere up to 30% faster than the Radeon 680M it replaces.

In other words, the SLIDE may deliver GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q performance levels, but the device's cooling performance remains to be seen at this stage. Unfortunately, it is unclear when AYA NEO will deliver the SLIDE. Its 6-inch slide-out display appears unchanged though, as does its physical keyboard. In theory, the AYA NEO SLIDE could prove a good alternative to the GPD Win 4, which has run into display issues shortly after GPD started shipping Indiegogo orders.
